If proof was needed of a construction bonanza in New Zealand, a Sept 2018 report shows an unprecedented 140 long-term tower cranes are operating countrywide currently.

Auckland boasted 90 or 64 per cent of the total New Zealand crane count, according to Rider Levett Bucknall's latest Crane Index, an increase of 8.4 per cent in six months.

The Christchurch crane count was 22, up 69 per cent on th elast report for the first quarter of this year, Queenstown hosted 10, eight were in Wellington, six in Tauranga and Dunedin and Hamilton had two cranes each.

Design Engineering have responded to this increased scope of works to now include Tower Crane inspections and Building Construction Lifts. With 3 inspectors based in both the North Island & South Island qualified to carry out these inspections we are well placed to get the these done in all the locations.

We have recently increased our capability to carry out uncompromised and precise inspections using the latest IPLEX portable videoscopes. Having 3 units with 1.5m, 2m and a 10m cable capability and 6mm fully articulating cameras gives us the ability to inspect objects inside narrow paths with rough or sharp surfaces and temperatues up to 100 degrees C.

The touch screen makes the operation faster and more convenient. Able to rotate the probe 360 degrees and transmit the image over a long distance so that a deeper pipeline detection can be observed using HD cameras making the image clearer using LED lighting reaching more than 24,000Lux means there is nothing else on the market able to give the same image quality.

We offer full manual Phase Array flaw inspection of welds, this method of ultrasonic inspection fastly improves the time and ability to interpret flaws in welds than the traditional UT A scan method.

We now offer detection of surface cracks using Eddy current and have Level 2 qualified technicians, this is great to use without the removal of paint! - great cost savings in time and money especially on EWP major 10/5 year certifications and Crane inspections. IANZ endorsed reports can also be issued if required.

Eddy-current inspection is applied to welds using specialist probes and is not as messy as Dye Penetrant or Magnetic Particle inspection. Big cost savings can be made by not having to remove the paint.

Dont forget DE has both Gamma and Xray equipment to inspect welds in pipes and plates including an ultra light weight x-ray tube that only weighs 9kg.
